Periscope House: innovation and sustainability with mirrors underground
“Claerhout – Van Biervliet Architects has created a revolutionary project in Knokke-Heist, Belgium: Periscope House, a residence located underground that challenges the traditional conventions of architectural design. This project, focused on sustainability and energy efficiency, combines innovative materials and advanced technology, setting a new standard in modern architecture.
The design of Periscope House is fully subterranean, which presents common challenges such as lack of natural light and limited views. However, the main innovation of this residence lies in the use of movable mirrors arranged at 45-degree angles, which work as periscopes.”
