“In a world facing space constraints and the demand for sustainable practices, the Periscope architectural concept emerges as a visionary solution. It redefines spatial experience by allowing breathtaking landscapes to be experienced from below the surface, as if at ground level. This innovative construction approach enables the creation of underground or underwater spaces that defy traditional limitations. Periscope centers on a subterranean structure, surrounded by a dynamic, movable framework. While the main building remains static, the surrounding Periscope structure can be adjusted based on different needs. This dual-mirrored system, set at a 45-degree angle, is designed to be independently elevated, allowing natural light and scenic views to penetrate deep into underground levels. The result is a “space enhancer” that replaces the often dull atmosphere of basements with a vibrant connection to the external environment. Building underground offers notable sustainability advantages. The earth surrounding the structure provides natural insulation, leading to stable indoor temperatures year-round. By minimizing above-ground presence, Periscope also reduces the building’s visual and environmental impact. Beyond enhancing space and light, Periscope’s mobility contributes to sustainability. The mirrors serve as a gravity battery: during the day, solar-powered engines elevate them, and as evening approaches, they descend, enclosing the building and capturing energy through the movement. The gravitational potential energy of the descending mass can be converted into mechanical energy which drives a generator to produce electrical energy. This stored energy is a renewable asset that reflects the project’s commitment to a greener future. Inspired by the spatial elegance of Roman and Palladian villas, Periscope architecture embodies more than just innovative design, it embodies a paradigm shift in how we perceive and interact with space. This concept transcends the traditional by displacing reality, crafting an environment that harmonizes functionality, sustainability and beauty.”
